Pewter City[]

Pewter Cityis a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include thePewter Museum of Scienceand thePewter Gym. TheGym Leaderis looking for challengers, and the kid blocking the city's east exit will drag the player to the Gym if they try to leave. This is the second city to sellPotions(Viridian city sells them onceOak'sParcelis delivered to him), so stock up at the Poké Mart before challenging the Gym.

Pewter Museum of Science[]

ThePewter Museum of Scienceis located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus onfossilexcavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is50 for a child's ticket. The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later to receive avaluable itemfrom one of the scientists inside.

Pewter Gym[]

ThePewter Gymofficially specializes in theRock-type.Bulbasaur'sVine WhipandSquirtle'sWater Guncan inflict serious damage on each of the four opposing Pokémon. Despite being aFire-type,Charmandercan still hold its own withMetal Claw. Alternatively, aMankeyfromRoute 22or aButterfreefromViridian Forestcan be a big help, as Rock Pokémon are vulnerable toFighting-type moves, and the Gym's Pokémon have a difficult time against special attacks likeConfusion. Avoid bringingFlyingandElectricPokémon such asPidgeyorPikachu.

Brockawards the player theBoulder Badge, which gives a slightAttackboost during battle, and allows the use ofFlashin the field. He also hands overTM39(Rock Tomb) as a prize.

With thePewter Gymdefeated, the next stop isCerulean Cityto the east. Stock up onPotionsandPoké Ballsbefore leaving forRoute 3. Upon leavingPewter City, the player is stopped by one ofOak's aides. He delivers a package fromMom, which turns out to be a pair ofRunning Shoes. By holding the B Button, the player can travel faster than normal. While not as fast as theBicycle, it is still faster than walking.

Route 3[]

Route 3runs off to the east, ending at the east side ofRoute 4and the entrance toMt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so it may be necessary to rest up inPewter Citybefore venturing into the cave.

Route 4 (west)[]

A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance toMt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that offers to sell the player aMagikarpfor500. The fish can do nothing butSplashuntil level 15, but evolves into the much-strongerGyaradosat level 20. This offer allows the player to obtain the powerful sea snake earlier than normal, but Magikarp can soon be hooked for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon[]

Mt. Moonis a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, likeZubatandParas, can also be found here.

1F[]

CollectTM09(Bullet Seed) and theParlyz Healto the west, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

B2F (south)[]

The presence of aTeam Rocket Gruntmeans that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab theStar Piecefrom the platform and take the ladder back to the first floor.

1F[]

To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including aPotion, aRare Candy, and anEscape Rope. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

B2F (northeast)[]

Beat up the second Rocket Grunt, then pick upTM46(Thief) on the platform. Check the boulder for a hiddenEtherand return to the main floor.

1F[]

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab theMoon Stonein the corner and take the ladder to the basem*nt.

B2F (outer area)[]

Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where Super Nerd Miguel claims bothfossilslying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets the player pick one of the two. Like with theOld Amber, the scientists onCinnabar Islandcan resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. TheHelix Fossilwill become anOmanyte, while theDome Fossilwill become aKabuto; both areRock/WaterPokémon. Climb the final ladder to reach the exit.

Route 4 (east)[]

Route 4is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick upTM05(Roar) and the hiddenGreat Ballbefore jumping the ledge outsideCerulean City. A pair of Black Belts can be found training on the western hill. These men areMove Tutors, and each wishes to pass on the knowledge of a certain move. The man on the left teachesMega Punch, while the man on the right teachesMega Kick. Like the other Move Tutors, these moves can be taught only once.
