Grandpa’s Frozen Whiskey Sours

When I got married almost 40 years ago, I was introduced to a delicious frozen drink that my father-in-law made for every family get-together.

Yes, today, we’re sharing a contribution from Stacey’s grandpa — his famous whiskey sours. They were a staple at all of our beach vacations — nothing like an icy, fruity drink to enjoy by the water!

Grandpa called these whiskey sours and so that’s what I’ve always called them. But they really aren’t like your normal whiskey sour!

What is the Difference Between a Whiskey Sour and Whiskey Slush?

Of course there is one obvious difference — a whiskey slush is a frozen drink!

But beyond that, there are a couple key things that make a whiskey sour slush its own distinct drink.

If you order a whiskey sour in a bar, you’ll likely get some kind of bourbon mixed with sweet and sour. (For the record, I don’t like whiskey sours that you get in a bar.)

Grandpa made his whiskey sour slushes in the blender with frozen orange juice and Canadian whiskey. They taste refreshing, light, and totally delicious! A touch more fruit flavor, but just as strong.

Some recipes call for the addition of iced tea, but not this one!

We always topped our frozen whiskey sours with a Maraschino cherry or two. For me, it just wouldn’t taste the same without the cherries!

They are perfect for the summer—to serve at cookouts, by the pool, or after a day at the beach.

But my father-in-law would also make his frozen whiskey sours for holidays or any other time the family got together. I have so many memories of having this drink with my extended family on happy occasions.

No wonder thinking about this recipe makes me smile! It was always made with love.

What is the Best Whiskey to Use

We always made these with Canadian Whiskey, usually Canadian Club or Canadian Mist. This is a family recipe, and this is how the family made it. It always tasted good with these labels. I cannot vouch for any other type of whiskey, though your favorite bourbon or rye may work fine.

To make this batch, I used Canadian Club and a pint only cost $6.99. That was enough for about three batches, so it’s an economical recipe for a group gathering.

I made it for a recent pool party and everyone that tried a cup really liked it. With all the orange juice it almost tasted healthy…

Since it is alcoholic, always serve and drink responsibly my friends.

Whiskey Slush Ingredients

  • Frozen orange juice — The kind you get in a can
  • Lemon juice — Can be fresh squeezed or “real lemon” juice
  • Sugar — Granulated
  • Maraschino cherry juice — Plus the cherries for garnish
  • Whiskey — We always used Canadian whiskey, but you can use your favorite
  • Ice

How to Make a Whiskey Slush

Fill the blender halfway full of ice, then add the rest of the ingredients.

Blend on low speed to get started. As the ice breaks down, you can increase the blend speed. When everything is mixed to a slushy consistency — with no large chunks of ice — you’re finished!

If needed, you can add a little water or more whiskey.

Serve in pretty glassware of your choice and top with one or two maraschino cherries.
