Classic Cobb Salad is just a quintessential home-bred American created salad! It’s deceptively filling thanks to the array of toppings and the perfect dinner option in warm weather and when you want to use up the contents of your fridge. It’s really simple to make at home too, just like my Homemade Caesar Salad and Caesar salad dressing recipes.

Origins of Cobb Salad

This old-school Cobb salad first arrived on the scene back in the 1930’s thanks to a chef called Robert Cobb of LA restaurant Brown Derby. This blue cheese feast soon became a big hit with celebs and us normal folk alike! This flavorsome dish is definitely an oldie but a goodie! I find it super handy to pull together when I have some leftover roast chicken to use up and need a cool crispy fix.

If you looked up 10 Cobb salad recipes, none of them would look the same, and that’s the best thing about it. Cobb salad some in tons of variations from quick and scrappy dishes to more lavish restaurant-style dishes laden with layers of toppings. I personally think this classic Cobb salad recipe strikes the perfect balance between the two, but I’ll let you decide!

How To Make Classic Cobb Salad

This is so simple you won’t BELIEVE how fabulous the end result is.

  1. Start with the dressing. You’ll need a lidded mason jar for this. Combine all of the ingredients in the jar and shake.
  2. Then do the taste test and adjust the seasoning as you like. That’s it! Time to set it aside and move on to the salad.
  3. To make the salad itself, just place the various lettuces onto a large platter and put the other ingredients sitting on top. This can be as fancy as you want it to be. If it’s just for yourself or a quick family meal you don’t have to worry too much about amazing presentation, but if you’re serving to a crowd it can be nice to dress it up a bit!
  4. Give it a drizzle of the dressing you prepared earlier and serve!

Tips And Tricks For Making Classic Cobb Salad

  • If the tomatoes you have to hand aren’t very fresh, just toss them with a pinch of salt and leave them to sit in a strainer over a bowl for about 10 minutes for a quick flavor boost.
  • You can make the dressing a few days in advance if you like and it’ll keep in the refrigerator. Just make sure to shake it again before using.
  • For Paleo or dairy-free just leave out the eggs and blue cheese.
