While some Behringer audio interfaces are class-compliant (no additional audio driver software necessary), others will require either their proprietary driver or ASIO4ALL. To find your audio interface, navigate to the sidebar, click Computer Audio and select Interfaces.
The UM2 behaves in the same way - mono on Mic/Line input 1 only and mono on its headphone socket. The Hi-Fi Berry card on the analog bridge provides stereo in/out as expected.
Powered from the USB bus, the cross platform interface includes zero-latency direct monitoring for recording, LED indicators for status, signal and clipping, and a dedicated headphone output with volume control. Connectivity includes a pair of XLR/TRS combo inputs, while the outputs feature 1/4" TRS connectors.
Although most Behringer audio interfaces have their own driver (version 4.38 as of July 2018), some of the smaller interfaces will require the third-party driver, ASIO4All. These interfaces include the UMC22, UM2, UCA222, and UCA202.
To conclude, audio interfaces are tools designed for creators (such as streamers, podcasters, and recording engineers), while DACs are intended to be used by listeners. If you have additional questions regarding audio interfaces or DACs, please contact the Audio Solutions Team for further information.
Can You Use an Audio Interface Without a Computer? Yes, you can make use of an audio interface without a computer. Sound user interfaces come with their very own cpus and can operate as standalone tools.
Vocals and any direct-in instrument (ex.bass, electric guitar, keyboard) are recorded in mono. But you can still get a wider, stereo effect on something you've recorded in mono. You can record in mono but record the same part twice on two separate tracks, then pan them left and right.
Generally speaking, stereo sound is better for music, home theater, and video games because it is more immersive and because these types of audio files are made specifically for stereo listening. Stereo sound, however, is not categorically superior to mono sound.
Songs with vocals are mixed so that the priority focus is on the lead singer. Therefore, most producers and engineers opt for mixing the dry lead vocal signal in mono, while mixing the vocal effects, such as reverb and delays in stereo. You may have heard of the “Tree” Formula of mixing.
Improve the quality of your audio: An audio interface can improve the sound quality of your recordings by providing better analog to digital (A/D) and digital to analog (D/A) conversion than your computer's built-in sound card. This is especially noticeable if you are using high-quality microphones or instruments.
While you technically don't need an audio interface to record vocals, you should use one if you want to record professional, high-quality sound. When it comes to choosing an audio interface, we recommend the Scarlett 2i2 or Universal Audio Apollo Twin.
We suggest leaving them on during sessions but turning it off when the studio is not in use. They should always be the first thing you switch on and the last thing you switch off in your set-up to avoid spikes going through the rest of the system whilst gear is turned on.
The most important difference between these 2 models are the pre-amplifier. UM2 come with XENYX mic pre-amp which is actually made by Behringer. UMC22 has in-built with a Midas pre-amp. MIDAS is a professional audio equipment manufacturer which many of their pre-amps & mixing console are being used in big concerts.
It features a single XENYX combination XLR/TRS microphone preamplifier with selectable 48V phantom power. Additionally, the UM2 has a front-panel 1/4” instrument input with dedicated level control. Output is provided in the form of stereo RCA outputs and a front-panel 1/4” headphone jack.
The performance of an interface will depend on its driver and how well these drivers can communicate with a given computer. The better these drivers perform, the less latency is present and the lower buffer size you can use with minimal impact on your computer's performance.
A driver is a small piece of software that makes communication possible between the audio interface and the recording software. Without the driver, the operating system has no idea that the audio interface connected to the computer exists.
